Markup and margin are not the same number
Markup is a percentage added on top of what something cost you. Margin is the profit as a percentage of the price you actually charged. Mixing the two up is one of the most common pricing mistakes — a 20% markup and a 20% margin are different amounts of profit.
For example: something that costs you €100, marked up by 20%, sells for €120. Your profit is €20 — but that €20 is only 16.7% of the €120 sell price, not 20%. Markup is calculated on cost; margin is calculated on the sell price, which is always the bigger number, so margin is always lower than markup for the same job.
Neither number is "right" — but if you're quoting a job aiming for a 20% profit and you apply a 20% markup, you'll end up with less profit than you meant to.
